The 1962 season started in mid April. In late May the split between the two administrative bodies, the Federation and the Association, was resolved. All the results from the “SA State League” and the Association First and Second Divisions were removed from the record. The clubs from these leagues were re-organised into the Federation Second and Third Divisions, and league competition was started again from scratch on June 2nd. The First Division of the Federation was not affected by this and continued unchanged. Some clubs from the “SA State League” were considered so poor that they were condemned to play in the Third Division Reserve league.
I
don’t know the full story behind Sturt’s season. They won the league
convincingly – after all, they had been in First Division only two
years earlier. I think they must have decided to decline the promotion
because they had already decided not to continue. Most of their good
players left during the 1963 season- goalie Ivan Wallis was actually
signed by Hellas. They amalgamated with Orange at the end of the 1963
season. Several Sturt players had already transferred to Orange before
the amalgamation took place (the two clubs shared the same ground,
Mortlock Park.)
